By now you probably all know how much I love vintage and thrift shopping. When it comes to any type of shopping, I'm old school and I prefer to do so in person rather than online. When it comes to second hand shopping, this is even more true because I like to inspect for imperfections, feel the fabric and try the clothes on for fit. A few months back, Thred Up gifted me with a credit so I could shop for some second hand finds. I scored 2 cardigans and 2 dresses (one of each I'm wearing in these photos). All of them were brand new and still had the tags on them! I decided to share some pros and cons of my experience with Thred Up in case you were ever curious about the app and how it works.

First, a little bit about the app if you're unfamiliar with it. Thred Up is an app and website where you can shop and sell second hand items.

Some things I liked:
  • New with tags
There are lots of different filters to help you find exactly what you're looking for, but my favorite thing is being able to search by the condition of the clothes. This really helped me narrow things down because the app has a TON of listings.
  • Designer pieces
I didn't end up splurging on any designer pieces this time around, but they do have them listed on the app. I think Thred Up would be a great way to find a dress for a wedding or special occasion when you need something nice but don't want to break the bank.
  • There is an app
I like the fact that they have an app, rather than just a desktop version to shop. I usually online shop on my iPad, which sometimes isn't super compatible with certain websites, so the app was really user friendly.

Some things I didn't like:
  • Not enough photos
For each item, there was only a front and back photo, so that was a big reason I only looked for items that still had the tags on them since flaws were not noted in the photos.
  • No vintage
All of the pieces I scored were vintage inspired, but as far as brands go, everything on there seemed to be modern.
  • High prices
I scored 2 dresses and 2 cardigans for $95.99, which I consider to be a pretty good deal. However, some of the pieces seemed a bit over priced for what they were. For instance, I saw a White House Black Market dress that my sister wore back in 2008 listed on there, for what seemed to be, very close to the original retail price. I feel like even if an item is brand new with tags, it should be discounted more heavily if it is over 10 years old and not on trend at the moment.

Overall, I am happy with the pieces I scored from Thred Up. I think it's a great way to thrift shop if you prefer online shopping. I would definitely order from here again, but for the most part, I think I'll just stick to scouring the vintage and thrift stores here in NYC.
